14:00 – 15:30 | Workshop 2: Environmentally friendly research data management (Katharina Bergmann, Giacomo Lanza, Lisa Rosendahl, Janine Straka) Environmentally conscious research data management is important in order to reduce the ecological footprint of research data. Unlike organisational aspects such as air travel or paper consumption, the resource consumption of our digital data tends to be hidden from view – and its volume continues to grow. In addition to the amount of storage space required, the methods, technical processes and storage procedures used are also relevant, as they generally entail high energy requirements, material consumption and emissions. Environmentally conscious research data management can help to reduce this permanent burden. The NFDI working group “DMPs for Environmentally Friendly RDM” within the NFDI cross-section “Common Infrastructures” is working on a guideline for green, efficient, resource- and energy-saving research data management. The proposal is essentially based on the preliminary work of the Digital Humanities Climate Coalition (DHCC) and the GreeningDH working group within the Digital Humanities in German-speaking countries association (DHd) and is intended to expand this preliminary work into interdisciplinary recommendations. For this purpose, we want to obtain perspectives from various stakeholders and discuss the working group’s recommendations in the workshop. |
